Off to Work I Go

with 2 comments

Today was my second day on the job at FedEx Ground. Or more specifically, my second day of training. But who cares what it’s called, right? The important thing is that I’m getting paid. Training has involved the following harrowing and edge-of-your-seat tasks: Watching 5 (5!!!) different movies. Following along with said movies with two workbooks. And finally, two actual real world experiences that weren’t all that long.

To make a long story short, I haven’t really done much. What I have noticed is that the examples shown in the movies on a loaded truck look a ton nicer than real world loaded trucks. In fact, I’d have to say that FedEx employees are almost as rough with some packages as you fear they are. Oh well. At least there’s tape everywhere to fix the ripped packages.

I do enjoy the work though. While I haven’t experienced a full shift yet, if the time I spent in the trailers is any indication, I don’t think it’ll be as bad as I thought it would. And no, I’m not stealing anything out of any box for you. The security in the place is insane and I honestly doubt I could get it out the door. And yes, I think it would be fun if you bar-coded yourself and went through the system. While the commute might be painful, the trip through the hubs would be spectacular.

Oh, and I saw exactly one UPS package going through the system. I wonder how that is going to work out…
